The VDI Terminology Problem

In the rapidly evolving Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) world, the terms used by different vendors such as Citrix, Microsoft, and VMware can vary significantly - even when describing the same technology or feature!

For instance, terms like "Application Streaming," "Cloud Desktop," and "Pooled Desktops" might seem straightforward, but their exact meanings can differ between vendors. If, for example, we zoom in on the delivery mechanism for apps, each vendor has a set of capabilities and names, it becomes clear how complex this field is.

  • Citrix incorporates various packaging technologies and seamlessly integrates Microsoft solutions within its system:
    • Installed App - Part of desktop image (refers to full desktop publishing)
    • App Layering (All apps installed on a base image and selectively delivered to other pools)
    • Microsoft App-V (secure app package streaming to the pool)
    • Hosted Windows App (Traditional installation with app publishing - similar to AVD remote app)
  • Microsoft AVD has the following:
    • Installed App - Part of desktop image (can be part of a full desktop or published as a remote app)
    • MSIX App Attach (delivers an app on-demand from a central location
    • Microsoft App-V (secure app package streaming to the pool)
  • VMWare Horizon:
    • ThinApp
    • Microsoft App-V

Behind the scenes, each vendor has a lot of technology and capabilities, each with pros and cons. You must dig deep into it to understand if it suits your needs. Make a shortcut and get a call with one of our VDI experts

Vendors also use different terms to describe identical or very similar features.   One vendor might use the term "Application Streaming," whilst another might call it "Application Virtualization." This inconsistency can lead to confusion, misconfigurations, and even potential errors if the differences aren't fully understood.

Risk is high when migrating systems or onboarding new technologies. A simple misunderstanding of a term could lead to selecting an incompatible solution, misconfiguring a deployment, or underestimating the required resources, all of which may have a financial impact. However, these risks can be mitigated with the proper understanding and tools.
